For more than fifty years, Coles stood proud in the heart of downtown Billings, a cornerstone of the city’s bustling retail scene. Families remember strolling up the sidewalk, pushing open the polished glass doors, and riding the town’s only escalator to the upper floors — a true moment of mid-century excitement. In 1963, the store made headlines when it unveiled a major expansion to meet the growing demand from Billings and the surrounding High Plains.
Today, the memory of its distinctive sign, storefront, and the echo of footsteps on that famous escalator stir a nostalgia for a time when downtown Billings was the retail and cultural center of eastern Montana.
