The General Custer Hotel in downtown Billings—later renamed “The Grand” after its 1945 transition—was a sevenstory centerpiece of mid-century city life . Tucked beneath its lobby, the Saber (sometimes “Sabre”) Room was the place to be. Locals fondly recall a cozy bar and lounge where a pianist named Wil-lie entertained guests in the ’60s . While much of its history survives in vintage matchbook covers and dusty postcards, that intimate lounge atmosphere made it a downtown favorite—where sto-ries were shared, drinks flowed, and the pulse of Billings’ social scene beat strong.Today the building carries echoes of that era—if you look closely, you can almost picture the glow of the Saber Room’s sign after dark and hear Willie’s piano alongside quiet laughter. This design features the original logo of the historic Custer Hotel in Billings, Montana, a land-mark that reflected the design language of its era.

We recognize that elements of this imagery may include Native American motifs or artifacts. We share this piece of local history with care and respect, acknowledging that Indigenous cultures are living, vibrant, and not relics of the past.

We encourage reflection on the complex histories of the West and honor the many Native communities whose presence long predates Montana’s statehood.
