This is our original design by Tana Hanson. South Park has always been more than just grass and swings—it was one of Billings’ first truly shared spaces, where immigrant families from all backgrounds—German, Mexican, Chinese, African American, and Native American—could gather, play, and cool off after long days working in the nearby sugar beet factory. In an era when many places were divided, South Park stood as a rare and vital common ground where stories were swapped, music filled the air, and kids splashed side by side. It wasn’t perfect (the pool’s history reflects that), but it became a symbol of community, resilience, and the joy of coming together—something that still echoes today with every splash and summer celebration.
