South Park is one of Billings’ first true gathering places, where immigrant families from all walks of life (German, Mexican, Chinese, African American, and Native American) came together after long days at the sugar beet factory. At a time when the world often felt divided, South Park offered a rare space where neighbors could meet, kids could play, and cultures could connect. It wasn’t without its flaws (the early pool rules make that clear), but over time, it became a real symbol of community and shared history. That spirit is still alive today...especially every summer when the park comes alive with the music, dance, and flavor of the beloved Mexican Fiesta, now more than 70 years strong.
